About Us

Founded in 2002, the Africa Disability Institute (ADI), formerly known as VOICE Ghana, is a leading national non-profit and non-governmental organization based in Ho, Volta Region, Ghana.  Our mission is to champion inclusive development and social justice for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions, across Africa, focusing initially on Ghana, through impactful research, robust policy advocacy, and meaningful public engagement.

ADI's work is anchored on four critical thematic pillars:

  1. Groundbreaking Disability Research: We conduct rigorous research on disability, marginalisation, and vulnerability, providing crucial data to inform policy and practice.
  2. Strategic Policy Advocacy: We actively engage in policy advocacy and influence decision-making processes at all levels to advance disability rights and inclusion.
  3. Promoting Disability Inclusion: We champion the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society.
  4. Empowering Communities: We build capacity within communities and organisations to effectively advocate for and support people with disabilities.

Tackling Vulnerability and Marginalisation: A Holistic Approach

At the Africa Disability Institute, we understand that disability intersects with various forms of marginalisation. We are committed to advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities in key sectors that influence their daily lives, ensuring that they have equal opportunities and access to the resources necessary to thrive.

A Legacy of Advocacy:  The Voice for the Marginalised

For over two decades, ADI has established itself as a powerful voice for persons with disabilities and other marginalised individuals, advocating for their rights and social inclusion. Our transformation from VOICE Ghana to the African Disability Institute in December 2022 signifies a strategic expansion of our reach and impact.

Vision for the Future:  A Leading Center of Excellence

ADI envisions assembling a distinguished team of disability experts, social development professionals, human rights lawyers specialising in disability rights, and leading researchers, to engage in disability research and policy advocacy. We aim to become the preeminent resource for disability research and policy development, serving African governments, parliaments, and both public and private sectors.

Our future plans include establishing impactful Disability Fellowship Programs in partnership with leading academic institutions and professional bodies; hosting thought-provoking public lectures, seminars, and webinars; and organizing engaging social events to address critical disability issues.

Partner with Us:  Building a More Inclusive Future

We invite collaboration with donors, universities, research institutions, and all stakeholders who share our commitment to advancing disability rights and inclusive development in Africa. Join us in creating a lasting positive impact on the lives of marginalized individuals and communities.
