Strategic Policy Advocacy

We actively engage in policy advocacy and influence decision-making processes at all levels to advance disability rights and inclusion. Specifically, we advocate for the integration of disability-inclusive policies in:

  1. Government policies and social protection programs
  2. Political and local governance processes
  3. Civic decision-making platforms

We work closely with policymakers to ensure disability issues are reflected in development frameworks, helping to build equitable and inclusive communities.

We also equip persons with disabilities and their caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to advocate for their rights; participate meaningfully in development planning and resource allocation and access education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Environmental (Climate) Justice Advocacy

The effects of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities. Environmental challenges such as extreme weather events, poor infrastructure, and limited access to climate adaptation resources can exacerbate disabilities. ADI is dedicated to ensuring that the needs of persons with disabilities are integrated into climate policies, promoting resilience strategies that ensure equal access to resources and opportunities for all. Our advocacy efforts focus on addressing how environmental degradation can create or worsen disabilities, and ensuring that climate change policies do not leave anyone behind.

Political Advocacy and Accountability

Political participation is essential to ensuring that the needs and voices of persons with disabilities are heard. At the Africa Disability Institute, we advocate for accessible electoral processes and political platforms that address the unique needs of persons with disabilities. By working with governments and other stakeholders, we promote implementation of laws and policies that guarantee political representation for persons with disabilities at all levels of government. Our goal is to ensure that persons with disabilities are not just beneficiaries of policies but active participants in shaping them.

Join us as we redefine disability research and policy development across the continent.
