Established in 2002, the Africa Disability Institute (ADI), formerly known as VOICE Ghana, is headquartered in Ho, Volta Region, and operates as a registered national not-for-profit and non-governmental organisation.
With over 20 years of hands-on experience in disability inclusion and mainstreaming at the grassroots level, ADI has built a proven legacy of delivering impactful programs that empower persons with disabilities to advocate for themselves. Since its inception, the organisation has strategically engaged government, parliament, traditional and religious leaders, and other influencers to advance equality, inclusion, and active participation of persons with disabilities in civic engagement, local governance, and decision-making processes. These efforts align with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the African Union Disability Protocol, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goals 4, 8, and 10, as well as Ghana’s disability policy framework and Global Disability Summits Commitments.
Recognizing the need for a more robust platform, the board took a bold step in 2015 to transform the organisation into a leading Disability Research and Policy Institute and this vision was realised in 2022.
Our Vision and Expansion
ADI envisions becoming Africa’s foremost disability research and policy hub. We are building a faculty of experienced disability experts, social and development professionals, human and disability rights lawyers, and researchers who are committed to shaping policies that transform lives. Overall, ADI seeks to serve as a critical reference point for African governments, parliaments, and the public and private sectors in crafting disability-inclusive policies and practice.
Our ambition extends beyond policy advocacy. We aim to collaborate with academic and research institutions to run disability fellowship programs, host conferences, lectures, seminars, and webinars, and organise social events focused on pressing disability issues. Recognizing excellence, we will launch awards for state and non-state actors in Africa, starting with war-torn countries.
Join us as we redefine disability advocacy and policy development across the continent.
